Preventive Maintenance Programs for STATIONARY FLOODED BATTERY SYSTEMS Monthly Quarterly      - Annual  -     (or initial visit)

Record charging sys mfg./model, serial no., output rating, and current & voltage reading as displayed on charger á á á
Measure and record battery string current and voltage (metered reading for each battery string) á á á
Measure and record voltage from most positive to ground and from most negative to ground á á á
Measure and record AC ripple current going into battery á á á
Measure and record ambient temperature á á á
Inspect electrolyte levels and add to levels when required á á á
Measure and record pilot cell float voltage, specific gravity and electrolyte temperature á á á
Inspect battery, rack, floor, and battery area and clean as necessary (battery jar surface cleaned every other quarter unless needed quarterly) á á á
Inspect for cracks in cells, leakage, and terminal or rack corrosion á á á
Measure and record the specific gravity of each cell/unit corrected to 77 degrees Fahrenheit   á á
Measure and record the voltage of each cell/unit   á á
Measure and record the total voltage of the system   á á
Measure and record the electrolyte temperature of each cell/unit   á á
Visually inspect each cell/unit in detail (plates, posts, internal straps, sediment, dust covers, jars, spark arrestors, vent caps, felt pads, gravity tubes)     á
Visually inspect each connection      á
Measure and record internal battery resistance and connection resistance for all cells and electrical connections     á
Measure and record torque values of each electrical connection and correct per manufacturers specifications when necessary     á
Inspect the integrity of the battery rack (spot-check torque on battery rack frames, brace and tie rods, etc.)     á
Confirm and record the presence of safety equipment, product labels as supplied by the mfg., operating manuals, etc. á á á
Review records maintained by customer for periodic log entries á á á
Record date of cleaning and inspection á á á
Provide completed inspection report á á á

* Above items are based on IEEE standard 450 for maintaining battery systems
** All items above focus on verification of Battery System Uniformity. These tests are not executed to determine battery capacity however, can be used as a health measure to determine confidence levels that the battery will perform per manufacturers current discharge ratings.
*** Capacity testing should not be run unless the batteries' operation is questionable. Batteries should not be discharged beyond the specified final voltage. Load testing or capacity tests are considered a cycle on the battery. Cycling of a battery will shorten the life of the battery.
